Welcome to the module on Student Engagement for the Customized Learning Series! [Register Here] The class uses the book Eight Myths of Student Disengagement as our main text, as wells as some articles and videos. If your district is a TIE Member, the book is available at TIEReads for checkout or you may purchase your own copy, paper or ebook.
Every chapter of the book has "Stop and Reflect" and "Text-to-Practice" activities. For the assignments within this class, you may be asked to choose one reflection activity and one practice activity. The practice activities may require some class time with students, often asking you to try implementing specific activities with students or to participate in observation activities. If you are not in a classroom setting, you may need to "adopt" a class to complete some of the activities.
Recognize that engagement is not just on-task behavior, but rather engagement on behavioral, emotional, and cognitive levels.
Determine how how classroom practices, including types of tasks assigned, quality of teacher-student relations, and peer dynamics contribute to engagement.
Examine the role of out-of-school activities and families on engagement.
Study the dynamics of motivation with higher-level thinking tasks.
Examine the influence of interpersonal relationships, autonomy support, and academic support.
Study the impact of friendships and collaboration.
Examine how individual teachers, whole schools, and communities can help disengaged students succeed.
Recognize the importance of being proactive for increasing engagement for all students rather than just reactive for the "already disengaged."
